I found this part very interesting:

A lot of people thought it should all be military, and in a way both Eisenhower and Khrushchev were each conspiring against their own military.

It sounds strange, but then consider that the leading scientists for both NASA and the Soviet Space Program were ex-Nazi scientists. Germany had the first aerospace program back in the 1930s, and their drive at the time was to develop weapons. The first used in war was the V2 Rocket.

Between those guys, Einstein, and others, it makes you wonder if Germany would have been the world technology leaders today if their country had not been hijacked by a bunch of fanatics. They certainly produced soem of the best scientists of the 20th century.
