Thinking back I could not imagine having a kid in my 20's or even early 30's. We've always been fairly responsible but heck...we're talking the 80's and 90's. This way we spoiled ourselves before having a kid... Traveled and did some investing before making the big decision to bring a life into the world.
Now we are all grown up and confortable...Good time to have a child in my eyes.

Same story with my older sister. She and her husband had both kids late in life. I had both my kids before I was 30 (my wife and I have also been a couple since I was 15, and married for five years prior to our first child's birth). Looking back, I couldn't imagine having them later.
The health risks alone for the mother and child should be a serious disincentive to having kids past 35. Your point about being in a place in your life to have them is well taken, but I'll take health over a trip to Paris any day.
The old saying is, if you wait until you're ready to have kids, you never will.
