Yup. That's the question with all battery-powered hybrids. What is the expected service life of the battery pack, anyway?

that's the $64,000 question... they haven't been out long enough (besides the Prius) to know. But from what I've read, there haven't been any "widespread" battery pack failures that needed replacement. Supposedly the computer takes care of charging the battery cells in such a way as to optimize battery life.

Here's a good article on how the battery works from Johnson Controls. From what I understand, Panasonic is making the majority of battery packs.
