As far as laptops go, one needs to figure how long it's going to be useful for one though. I can't speak to Apple's products but if Windows is the selected platform, I think the laptop repairs are only worth considering for about 4 years before it makes more sense to replace them.

i'm not going to get into a back and forth... i've been in the IT business for over 20 years, imho,buying extended warranties for laptops are not worth the cost. There will always be the exception to the rule examples, but it is my experience that with Thinkpad laptops extended warranties are not worth it. YMMV.
