Hate to correct you, because it doesn't change the fundamental point of your message which is "we shouldn't believe anything scientists say because they are sometimes wrong", but....
The science of electrons and particle charges was well established prior to 1930. What was agreed on (and still is) is that the atom is the smallest
indivisible particle. Electrons were discovered in the late 19th century and the science of them was well established by WWI. Einstein's theory of relativity, which was written in 1905, makes many assumptions about electrons and their behavior.
