you are correct. It raises the point in which the transmission will shift, and then lowers your mpg. No harm done to engine, just don't continually redline for extended periods of time.

On sport package equipped X5s, the "sport" button (which is different from the shifter feature) does nothing to the trans, it tunes the suspension, throtte response, etc.
