The 2006 X5 will have had support for an Aux input to it's radio, the 2001 E39 will not. I believe this feature became available arround 2003.

You can't just use the CD Changer connection, but you can get add on modules which will enable Aux in through the CD Changer connection (they emulate a dummy CD Changer).
