That leads me to wonder if there may be more than one vendor for the iDrive controller mechanism. If so, which variant is in any particular X5 is pretty much "luck of the draw" depending on what parts hit the production line when that vehicle is being built, much the same as the diferent brands of tires show up on otherwise identical vehicles.

i don't think so. i haven't heard of one 2008 owner who 'does' have it....
