The 1-series has never been much cheaper to make or sell than the 3-series. Think about it too; you're getting the same engine, similar gearbox, and same standard equipment. The body is smaller, but not much smaller. As a result, the price tag is also smaller, but not much smaller.
If BMW sold a 120d coupe with "European standard equipment", then the price tag would be more like $25k to start. But then it'd jeopardize Mini sales, and BMW would become the laughingstock of the luxury car industry by charging extra for an electric sunroof or cupholders.
C'mon folks. BMW wants to be a premium marque.
