Oscar is one of, if not my favorite, jazz musician of all time. I'm sad to hear of his passing. If I'm not mistaken, he was still touring across North America through last year despite being well over 80.
He was one of the last remaining legacy links to jazz's glorious bop era. He was one of the few musicians who could simply play with anyone, from hard bop to big band swing. As a keyboard player, I simply marveled at the physical mastery Oscar had over the keyboard, as well as the glorious riffs that would emminate. His skills simply defied the impossible.
Many great pianists have graced the jazz scene - T Monk, Powell, Brubeck, Garner, Tatum, Evans, Hancock, but hands down, in my humble opinion, Oscar Peterson was THE BEST OF ALL TIME.
Go in peace, Oscar Peterson. Your music will play on forever.
