I guess if you bought a BMW, then wanted to sell it privately and linked to BMW's site to give the specs on the car...would that be "stealing" from BMW?

Two different examples. When you bought you BMW you got the title. Simple. Use it, sell it, trade it, it is your property.
When you bought the CD you didn't get title to the music, you got a license to listen to it. That license doesn't give you the right to copy it. Same situation as computer software, which is a better example than the BMW.
