Scott27 is a very reliable source on these forums, and although I can't find it now, somewhere he mentioned the X6 costing between 5-10% more than the X5, which fits with my theory that it will start at around 50k. His post might have been on E90post.com or xbimmers.com, that's why I'm having trouble finding it.
Think about what the car is. It is essentially the coupe form of the X5. The cars are essentially the same, except the X6 has four seats and a sloping roof line. Yes, the X6 starts off with shiny new turbo engines and DPC, but these will all make their way into the X5 within a year or two. Do you suggest that the price of the X5 will jump 15k when this happens? No, it won't.
The best analogy for X5 and X6 is E90 and E92. Same car, one is a coupe and one is a sedan. Coupe is more expensive just because it's a coupe. Cars share exact same technology, and almost same body.
Don't compare the two cars like you would the 5 series and 6 series, I think that's the mistake most automags are making. Although the 6 is based off of the 5 series chasis, it is more of a 7 series coupe, BMW make this clear with the price, options and most importantly the look.
Nothing makes the relationship between X5 and X6 more clear than their similarity in appearance: interiors are identical (same with E90 and E92) while exteriors are extremely similar with minor changes (bumpers, minor change in lights, and of course the roof). There is absolutely no way BMW can justify a 15k premium, and it is definitely not the market they are shooting for.
