Police agencies south of New Orleans were so fearful of the crowds attempting to leave the city after Hurricane Katrina that they sealed a crucial bridge over the Mississippi River and turned back hundreds of desperate evacuees, according to two paramedics who were in the crowd.

They don't tell you what bridge was sealed (it was the Crecent City Connection) in that article which makes it very hard to check on the accuracy of that bridge even being available considering so many bridges in NO were out of commission. Police may have been more concerned that the structural integrity was not up to par.
Also I found another story stating that 100 people were allowed accross that Crecent City Connection bridge, again...the media can jade a view anyway they want.
