German OE glass (Audi and BMW) are notoriously "soft". I've had to replace them on both a Z3 and A4 in the past, and I talked to a few glass shop owners about it and they agree. You can elect to go with a windshield from PPG, which will stand up to chips better, but it will not have the etched BMW logos.

If damage is on the larger side and in the drivers' field of vision talk to your auto insurance carrier as some will replace the glass for free or with a minimal charge, depending on your policy.
