When Dr. King was alive, he was treated by the media in the same way people like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton are treated today. He was routinely called a self promoter, a communist, and was even called a racist. The director of the FBI once called him the greatest terrorist on the planet.
Like so many other "heroes" of history, he was seen as a very controversial figure who most in the media despised -- until his death that is. Once he was dead, then of course everyone loved him. I think what they loved, was that he was no longer alive and could not stir up any more trouble.
King did not run a one man show, although for some reason history likes to remember him that way. He was the leader of the SCLC which was a rather big organization. Almost all of those who were in the SCLC leadership under Dr. King are still alive, and they are among the ones you claim to "loathe". If he were still alive, I can be pretty sure you would loathe him as well as the "many who claim to have taken up his mantle".
Those people have indeed "take up his mantle". Dr. King did a lot more than give an occasional speach. He spent most of his time organizing protests, strikes, and media campaigns against government, law enforcement agencies, and private corporations. And many of those protests and strikes turned violent and causes deaths. Throughout the late 1950s and into the 1960s, he was probably the most publicly criticized person in America.
Perhaps you do loathe those others for different reasons. But I suspect that you loathe them for doing the same exact things that Dr. King did back in his day to force change. You are correct about one thing though...he was truely a brave and enlightened man. It's just too bad that our country mistreats such people and only celebrates their legacy after they are dead.
