The previous generation 3.0 gas engine in the X3 holds 6.6 quarts oil and in the X5 holds 7.6 quarts. So yes, the oil pan is smaller in the X3. Not sure about the capacity in the newer 3.0 engines, but they don't have a dipstick, so you can't extract anyway.
