21.7 / 26.6 mpg - US gallons or imperial gallons?
Anyway I would go with petroleum for 3- series/5-series and with diesel for X6/X5. Anyway if tuned those engines are whole different animals: diesel ~ 330 Hp/ 710 Nm, petroleum ~ 400Hp / 670 Nm!
