I own a few firearms too. Nothing too exotic... yet. Just a couple of AR15s, a .45, a 9mm. Thinking about buying an AK47 and perhaps another AR in the future...

My personal view of gun control? Good gun control means being able to hit your target.

Seriously, though:
- I'm opposed to waiting periods. If you have waiting periods for firearms because they are "dangerous items" then why not also have waiting periods for purchasing other things-- steak knives, cars, baseball bats, etc. Used improperly these objects can also kill people (and I'd wager a bet that more people were killed by cars last year than by firearms).

- I'm opposed to excessive background checks. The current system is somewhat acceptable, but still can take too long. The last time I purchased a handgun I had to wait a couple of hours for the approval to come back from Virginia (all of VA's gun sales go through the VA State Police for background checks IIRC). There should be a maximum time limit of 15 minutes; having to wait longer is just simply inconvenient.

- I'm opposed to limiting the types of weapons that people can buy and own. Bad guys on the street who want automatic weapons already have ways of getting their hands on them. I seriously doubt they're deterred by a law that says "you're a bad person if you own on of these". They're already bad guys and they know it. The only thing that these types of laws do is limit and punish us law abiding citizens. It makes no sense to punish people who are doing the right thing, especially when having these laws makes little to no difference to people who are doing the wrong things.

- I'm opposed to limiting the number of firearms a person can own, or limiting the number of firearms a person can buy in a given time period. Virginia has some rather dumb laws in this area that limit the number of weapons a person can buy in a 30 day (I think) time period. Of course, given the political climate in Virginia this isn't likely to change soon (we've had to suffer through two Democrats as governors-- neither of which have done a reasonable job limiting taxes or helping the citizens... but I digress... just remember that Kaine isn't Able...)

Rather than passing laws that limit what law abiding people can own/do/buy, our legislatures should be spending time trying to figure out what can be done to deter and prevent crime. Give our law enforcement agencies more resources. Provide good examples of desirable character traits-- like honesty, responsibility, and integrity. Allow children to be properly disciplined in schools-- this includes things like bringing back spanking in those nutty places that have outlawed it. Come up with ways to force parents to take some responsibility in raising their children.
