Nope. xDrive is permanently engaged and is always working.
The 4x4 light under the DSC symbol is a misnomer. When it flashes, DSC is actively regulating the drive forces in addition to xDrive. If it is constantly on, then DSC has either malfunctioned or is shut off via the dash switch.
