Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of eliminating or streamlining most of these programs.

- Governments should not be involved in health care at all. This should be left to private companies. Any time the government gets involved with something like this, all they do is screw it up, provide less services, and make it cost more. I don't need some bureaucrat telling me how many times a year he thinks I need to see a doctor, chiropractor, etc.

- Medicare and Social Security, while necessary for those who have paid into it all their lives and are retiring, should not exist in its current form for generations who are working now or will soon be working (Gen X/Y). I'd love to have the ability to take the money I'm wasting on Social Security now and invest it on my own instead. Programs like Social Security create a planned dependence on government for income. As freedom loving, independent Americans, dependence on governments-- foreign or domestic-- is something that we should be working to reduce and eliminate, not something that we should be planning for and advocating.

- As for welfare and Medicaid... Well, we will always need some type of safety net in place for unforeseen situations. But this needs to be treated as something that is used by people as a last resort, rock bottom and nowhere else to go except starve in the streets option. Currently welfare/public support is a lifestyle for some... that needs to change. Those who truly need help should always have a place to turn, but those who just don't want to work shouldn't be able to get by on the backs of others' efforts. Currently, we do not have a system that has adequate capabilities in place to differentiate between these two categories. (BTW, aren't welfare programs currently administered by the state? I thought that the states received block grants from the federal government for administering some kind of public assistance programs?)
