I have always had wood stoves, which have heated our whole house, until we moved into a "cookie cutter" with a gas FP. it does throw a suprising amount of heat, and last winter probably saved our pipes during a long power outage.
Even wood burning FP's (my PREFERENCE, if I could tear our gas POS out, I would replace with wood in a second) cause no smoke in your house if you have installed it correctly and with a chimney. The only thing I like about the gas is that I haven't chopped, carried and / or stacked wood in the last 5 years
