The problem is the symbian phone, it does not support pbap, Nokia have gone back on an agreement with the car manufactures to support this and as such all their symbian phones don’t transfer the contacts to the cars ULF (it’s the same for Audi, VW, Rover, Mini, Rolls Royce, Bentley and Skoda etc...).

There are two work a rounds that you can try.

1: Download the contacts manager from the nokia web site (for symbian 3rd Gen phones).

2: If you have a 4th Gen ULF or better the try this.

First, delete any paring for the phone on the phone and ULF, then go into pairing mode on the car, and use the N95 to find the car.

Enter your pin number so the phone is paired. But do not connect to the phone yet (say no when asked by the ULF), and don't exit pairing mode on the BMW yet either.

Now on the N95 go to contacts. Select about 10-15 contacts (hold down the pen key and scroll down). Then go to options -> send business card -> via Bluetooth. Select the BMW from the list of Bluetooth devices and it'll send them across. Repeat for the rest of your contact list.

Once done, now connect to the phone (via the phones BT connect menu) the phone will connect then disconnect straight away, now turn off the cars ignition to save the pair.

You may end up with a few duplicates in your BMW phonebook depending on whether your original contacts had multiple phone numbers or not. But it definitely works and displays incoming call name properly etc.

I tried doing the whole contacts list in one go but it failed - doing it piecemeal takes a little longer but its a one time thing.

My car is a 2002 E46 with SatNav + TV + BT (retro-fitted), connecting with a N95 - V20.

My 3rd Gen ULF was a bit hit and miss, but I've now upgraded to a 12th Gen and this works 100% all the time, no sms reading but everything else.
