Big trucks average 5 mpg. Because the cost of diesel is so volatile and there is no way to include this fluctuation in a rate, truckers charge fuel surcharges. These surcharges are based either on a percentage of the freight charge or on a cents per mile of the trip. Current fuel surcharges in my world are about $0.45 cents per mile. If I ship a load from the east coast to the Walmart Nation location in southern CA the fuel surcharge is $0.45 per mile on approx 2800 miles. Do the math, that's $1260 for incremental fuel costs in addition to the freight rate. Joe consumer pays the price.
