It's not worth the saving of using lower octane. The engine will retard it's timing to compensate, producing less power, thus using more fuel. So, the cost saving basically gets cancelled out. The only time that I can see a slight benefit in using a lower octane is strictly freeway cruising, where the loss of power won't be noticed too much.
