Works for me in my ///M Roadster - which should have a pretty similar ULF module to your X3.

The 328i is a whole new platform but according to BMW those work.

You can actually plug in the iPhone into the iPod kid and have it play music, all while charing and using the bluetooth to make the calls... Pretty cool stuff!
