Hi Niko,
My father is moving back so I know the process well. I am not sure how you are moving but in his case (metoikisia), he has to have the car for at least 6 months and then export it. He also needs to have the Metoikisia paper from the General Consulate of Greece along with the Certificate of Conformity (Good luck finding that, they are giving me hard time, BMW of America)... which is required for the Greek Registration and KTEO.
Port: Pireas - Athens. It doesn't really matter since this is a metoikisia and he won't have to pay any taxes to Greece, only registration and greek plates. Pireas is the most convinient. If you are not having a metoikisia, you might have to pay taxes so in this case you might want to bring the car from a different European country to save tax money. I am not sure, since this does not apply to us.
Shipping cost from New York to Athens including insurance is about $1200 ~ $1300. It takes 3 weeks for the car to arrive to Athens.
PS: Man, the insurance for the X5 in Greece is crazy. It is solely based on the car's value and with full insurance (you need it in Greece) several insurance companies quoted me from 2100 ~ 2800 euros/year. (A similar X5 in Greece costs around 80.000 euros). ~ Crazy, I know.
