question has been answered by guru KiwiJochen. It seems the voices for the phone module are separate to the nav, and it chooses the language based upon the nav coding. So because my nav is USA code, the phone uses the USA voice, and not the GB voice that I have fooled the nav into using. A quick call to my BMW SA and he has graciously offered to code the unit for me.
