If you had a problem with the room, your recourse was with the hotel staff, before you stayed the night.

If they had a money-back satisfaction guarantee, you wouldn't need to cancel the credit card. If they don't, and they don't want to comp you a room, you are SOL. You agreed to pay when you signed the credit card, so removing the charges is generally under the banner of lying for benefit or gain. Try paying attention.

Of course, if it is all bluster and the charges get reapplied when the hotel produces your signed credit card slip, then I guess you didn't really have them removed, did you?

And you think I'm the idiot?
Doesn't matter, I wasn't satisfied, I read the clause about charges and disputes fully, and I chose to proceed. SHOULD they advise me I am in the wrong I will drop the dispute in 2 seconds flat, but till this point nobody has disagreed with me. I think most of my Anger comes from the fact that they blew me off and acted like my dissatisfaction was somehow unimportant and stupid. That is what really made me want the refund.
