<tangent> Years ago, my mother came to visit my wife and I, when we lived in Orlando. While out shopping, my mother literally bumped into a large black man as she was walking out of a store, and he was walking in. After the initial "excuse me's", they sort of stared at each other, then said "Don't I know you?" Turns out they had known each other from childhood (my mom was 60 or so at the time). When my mom asked the man what he had been doing, he sort of self-consciously said, "I'm a Pip." She laughed and said he had always been a pip (in the WW2 era meaning of a good-natured rascal). He said, "No, I really am a Pip. With Gladys Knight." My mother, whose knowledge of modern music was virtually non-existent, said "OK, great to see you", and hurried to catch up with me and my wife. When she related all this to us, she was still oblivious to the fact that her childhood friend was "somebody".
