She could have and should have handled it differently. She could have told them upfront. None of us know what her attitude was which as someone else mentioned would surely impact how she was treated. Does she fly frequently, did she even realize it? Who knows, maybe she did it intentionally.
However, what risk do nipple rings pose that they needed to be removed prior to boarding the plane? I'm allowed to have my tweezer in my pocketbook and that's sharp enough to cut someone's jugular vein.
You ask why would you taken hidden/hard to remove metal objects through a metal detector...because they were hard to remove.
