A much-discussed topic on this and other boards, whether you can get a free oil change prior to the lights coming on. To clarify an earlier post in this thread, it is NOT part of your warranty. It may be part of your maintenance agreement.

According to the BMW owner's manual, absolutely not, you have to wait for the lights to show up.

According to a very old TSB that is included on the home page of X5 World, BMW will pay for an oil change after 12 months (low mileage) but will not reset the lights, so you get another when the lights do come on. That was a US TSB, not valid in Canada, and it is out of date, but it may help some.

In practice, it varies by dealer. Some will do it, some won't. They don't have to according to the published literature, but many still have the habit of doing it. My dealer will do any early oil change at 14 months for low mileage vehicles (not sure why that figure, but I go with it).
