This case was not so dissimilar to the case of Rubin Hurricane Carter. This was a case of a corrupt police department framing an investigative reporter who had typically written stories about their corruption.
Interestingly enough, the cop who was killed was hated within the department as he was a straight shooter, did not take money, and was considered a problem by local organized crime, and that's why he was killed.
