Oh no. I sense a Nikon vs. Canon debate. :eek:

Just to be clear, "we" are very happy with our Canon 40D's. You're looking at the Nikon D40. Totally different.

Most people will tell you, as they told me, that your decision to go Nikon or Canon depends on whether you have a lens system you are committed to. If not, the field is open to you. Then it comes down to personal preference. Both make excellent cameras. I was partial to Nikon, having had some experience years and years ago with an F3 35mm SLR. That was the shiznit back in the day! I went with Canon because of the familiarity I have with the software and they just felt better built and better in my hands. (The D3 feels great though!)

I know that there are people here far more knowledgeable than me and they should weigh in. I think that you need to go out and feel the cameras you like and then assess the specs of each one. If you have an absolute price limit that might make your decision easier. Like I've stated before, I started my dSLR hunt with a budget of about $700 - $800 and wound up spending over $1300. No regrets at all either. I love knowing and feeling that under the black exterior is this solid looking chunk of magnesium.
