Reason being one I purchased shuts down after ~ 30-60 seconds. BMW shop says no (not in this instance) but I thought I would ask the experts here.

I've seen this on my DSP, it sometimes "dissappears" after 30 or so seconds, if you look on the monitor the DSP option is also greyed out.
It may be worth checking all the connections as I suspect that if the i-bus doesn't get a response from the DSP it assumes it is not there and after a while it stuts down.
When this happens I can correct it by shutting the car off and starting it again and its usually OK after that - I have also re-seated all the connections to the DSP but sometimes it still happens
