As the resident "nerd" at my company responsible for security, I thought it might be good to explain something.
While your local IT Department has access to everything on the network, I will bet you that they couldn't care less about what sites people go to on the internet, or how much time they spend on it, nor do they have any interest in reading your emails or documents.
It's not up to IT to be the company "how are you spending your time at work cops", that's the responsibility of each department manager/head and HR. It's akin to the situations where an employee is sitting at his/her desk reading a book or the newspaper or talking on the phone. Now if HR comes to me and asks to see logs of what sites employees are going to, or how many IM conversations they are participating in, I merely have a report run and hand the results to HR. It's not my job to oversee how productive anyone is or isn't being during the day, unless they work for me
I also will not track nor provide data on anyone within my own department and specifically exclude them from any tracking systems, I'm not going to be perceived as "internal affairs" for the IT department, it's not fair to me or anyone else in the department.
