Inspector Gadget,
I have a 2005 Diesel 6 speed manual with 86,000km. The front pads are just about half worn and you can hardly feel a lip on the front discs.

I used this website to answer your question: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do
I entered 2005 3.0L petrol and looked up the pad, discs and caliper part numbers.
I then did the same with 2005 3.0L Diesel and came up with the same part numbers.
So, it would seem that the petrol and diesel (and I expect the small V8) brakes are all the same.
Good Luck
Colin.
