Ok, you make a point. But that still does not change the fact that there is two very separate meanings to the word Marriage.
1) It's Religious context.
2) It's State/Contract context.

If we were living in a society where marriage was only an institution recognized by Religion. I might entirely agree, depending on your Religion.

But, since MARRIAGE is an institution of Government with Contracts, Divorce, Benefits, etc. and Marriage is also recognized as an institution for people who do not believe, practice Religion at all. Then putting a value system on it that only recognizes it's religious significance, is to discredit all the non-religious conventions of the practice.
