The head units are, just like the rest of BMW electronics, junk and prone to failure. The good news is that they can be repaired if you have a good local electronic repair shop. The alternative is a new unit from the $tealer.
You could try unplugging it and replugging it again in case it might be just dirty contacts. Also check the fuse/s associated with the unit.
North Hollywood repair (check the web) have ads in the Roundel mag. all the time. Given your distance from them they MAY offer some advice other than send it to us but I don't know them so cannot say for sure.
