Oil free (meaning that lubricating oil does not come in contact with the compressed air) is fine, but it is different than draining the water out. Water comes from the humidity in the air; it collects, causes maintenance problems in the tank and the tools, and so on.
I don't know if I would say maintenance is a lot of work, but lack of maintenance can cause a lot of problems. Maintenance is relatively simple, it is just critical that you do it.
