Oh boy ... here we go again. Another "pro" trashing SMG based on the reliability woes he red in the press about SMG and what a sloppy system it is to drive. When will this end?

Fact is ... I've driven my M6 for 22,000 km now on roads and on the track. Believe me, the system has been put to the test and ... oh wonder ... it is still running flawless today.

Did you drive the M6 six speed and the M6 SMG? If the answer is yes (which I doubt) you will still have to admit that you can not change gears as fast as with the SMG. Getting off the line with an SMG NEVER fails and downshifts can not be matched with a stick. Even pro's admit that.

I do agree that SMG is not as smooth as an auto gearbox but shifts sure as hell are fast and accurate. The dual clutch system overcomes this problem and seems to shift as accurate as the SMG does so that is the reason why BMW is changing to the dual clutch system.

The F1 super fast from Ferrari is from another planet. Deadly accurate yet very smooth in normal traffic. But under full power you get the neck slap as you do with the SMG and that ... is a lot of fun.

I'm sorry but I didn't see the point of your initial answer and I still don't see your point after reading your second reply

I just can't stand it if people trash the SMG system based on what they read in the press. Half of these guys think they can take a car around a track but ... . If I want full comfort I'll buy a fully loaded 650. If I want fun and power which can be used every day I'm taking an M6 (with SMG obviously).

Oh ... one last remark: when I tested the new M3 at Paul Ricard in the South of France the M3 (6 speed) all had to have their clutches changed after 2 days of driving. The M6's however were running perfect. So much for reliability of the 6 speed I guess

Cheers mate,

M
