Sabine Schmitz
The fastest taxi driver in the world
If you've ever been to the Nürburgring, you must have seen Sabine Schmitz. She's an ex-professional race driver who now drives 1100 to 1200 laps every year in the Ring Taxi and runs a famous (infamous?) establishment in Nürburg (the Fuchsröhre).
According to various interviews, she was 6 months old when she first drove the Ring (albeit in the back seat of her father's car). She did her first lap behind the wheel when she was 17, without a driver's license in her mother's car. Of course, mother didn't know what Sabine was up to :-) When she was 19, she set the lap record in a Ford Sierra Cosworth (8'16").
Sabine Schmitz, a.k.a. "the fastest taxi driver in the world", is a former professional racing driver who owns the Fuchsröhre (Foxhole) bar-restaurant in Nürburg, Germany. Her company, Sabine Schmitz Motorsport, based at the Nürburgring, offers advanced driver training and the "Ring Taxi" service for passengers.
Sabine has been an occasional motorsport guest commentator, and is known for her gleefully dry descriptions of driving incidents. Quote: " Never enter Karussell when on the brakes! I have gone round there on the roof, I know what I'm talking about."
Since December 2004, Sabine has gained notoriety in Britain for gleefully showing up BBC Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, by soundly beating his Nürburgring time in a Jaguar S-Type Diesel, and nearly matching it in a Ford Transit van in 2005. She has been mooted as a co-presenter of the show's Autumn 2005 season, taking over drive test duties from Clarkson, who will be out of action for medical reasons.
