Actually, there are no Federal laws against prostitution. It is a state by state issue. As for the question of "why is it illegal in most states?" -- probably because of all the religious institutions and their political influence. It was legal around 100 years ago. Then in the early part of the 20th century, they started outlawing it state by state. That thing about seperation of church and state is just an illusion.
