If I was buying a Blu-ray disc player now, I'd definitely consider the PS3 over standalone. Prices have not started dropping a lot on standalone players yet (especially for the good ones) and the PS3 has a very, very good BD player that supports 1080p/24, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Res Audio, and the constant firmware updates keep bringing more upgrades (free). The upscaling is also very good for your older standard DVDs (1080p over hdmi, 1080i over component). Also, the PS3 gets a new high definition movie download service this fall which should be very cool if they price it right. Oh, and of course there is the gaming that speaks for itself, and the media hub services.
Having owned a standalone BD player and PS3, I would buy the PS3 again in a heartbeat. By Christmas time prices will be down a bit on standalone players and 2 years from now you'll be able to get very good, upgradeable BD player for a couple hundred bucks. For now, the PS3 just offers the most bang for the buck, specially when you consider Sony's commitment to BD.
