Probably because 740i sounds better than 730i. The bigger number always sounds better. The 750i is only a 4.4. I guess they could have gone with 730i and 740i, but 740i and 750i sound bigger and better. 730i reminds me of the 7 series from the late 80's with the 6-cylinder that was way underpowered.
