Just a guess, but likely because this is the uprated twin turbo 3.0 six. The logic (?) for the 335 seemed to be that it was a 3 litre with 300 hp, performing more like a 3.5 litre, or at least more than a 3.0. This 3.0 in the 740 is now at 326 hp, and BMW likely wants to distinguish it from the 35 moniker. Across the range, the two final digits aren't signifying displacement any longer.
It will all make for good automotive trivia questions years from now. Anyone else driven the 1.9 litre 318, or the 2.5 litre 323?
