You ABSOLUTELY have to have the carrier designed for the hitch. The problem is if you cannot get it from him, you might have trouble finding one. My repairs on my X were delayed a couple of weeks bc the hitch-specific carrier is on national backorder - they couldn't even get one from Germany. Finally found one at some dealer in the US.
