Thats the actual diagnostic tester used by BMW at the dealer service centers that communicates with ALL computers in the vehicle. There are probably 20 to 30 computers installed in your car with diagnostic capabilities, but aftermarkes "code readers" or scanners can't talk to them. The GT1 gives you a list of all installed computers, shows you which ones have faults stored, and diagnostic test plans to determine the cause of fault. Very handy piece of equiptment, but costs over $12,000 and is no longer made available. (releasing the newest, next generation of BMW diagnostic equiptment later this year, the 3G workshop)
