Immigrants make up Larger Share of Nation's Uninsured

While the uninsured population in the United States is still dominated by native-born Americans, it is becoming increasingly made up of immigrants. People who were not born in the United States account for about 55 percent of the increase in the U.S. uninsured population over a 12-year period ending in 2006, according to a study released this week by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
In 1994, immigrants accounted for 18.8 percent of the U.S. uninsured population, by 2006 they accounted for 26.6 percent of the uninsured population.
Whether an immigrant is uninsured is highly correlated with his or her length of time in the United States. Just more than 27 percent of foreign-born noncitizens who entered the United States before 1970 were uninsured in 2006. Comparatively, among foreign-born noncitizens who entered the country after 1999, 49 percent were uninsured.
