Why did I go to this expense and trouble? Because I have AT&T in Connecticut (like you) and was not getting enough bars on my phone. I now get an additional 2 or 3 and typically show 5 bars.
One does lose a lot of space in the center console but I decided that I could live with that. I would not do mod this if my phone reception was better.
And, there is no link to or controlling through iDrive. It still connects via Bluetooth but the advantage is that you are using the car's antenna.

Can you provide the link or otherwise explain the install please. I picked up the parts but am not sure of the hook up. I previously installed the cradle in an e60 M5 without a problem, but I see no feed holes etc for the X5 center console.
