Probably because Georgia is at a location that may help US strategically. (I mean geographically) Think of oil transportation, and military placement among other things.

Plus Georgia has the 3rd largest troops in Iraq, next to U.S., and Great Britain.

Georgia probably knew U.S. would "help out" that's why they went ahead and further pissed off Russia.
